Beyond The Desktop Spreadsheet

چکیده
Hypernumbers is a new commercial web-based spreadsheet. It addresses several risk factors in deploying spreadsheets. Traditional risk management of spreadsheets has focused on run-time risk incorrect formulae, accidental overwriting of formula, unapproved adaption of the spreadsheets structure by an unapproved person and so on. The sources and lifecycles of spreadsheet errors are by now quite well known Current risk management has three major mechanisms to address risk. Firstly, to instrument spreadsheets using their scripting capabilities to impose certain behaviours on them. Secondly, to minimize risk by using operating procedures and standards which are shown to be less error-prone that ad-hoc spreadsheet development methods. These are training intensive and hard to police. Thirdly, to inspect and audit spreadsheets in operation. Hypernumbers is attempting to address spreadsheet risk in two radically new ways. The core approach is not to mitigate risk but to engineer out risky activities. The curtilage of the spreadsheet has been extended to include much of the operational environment in which conventional spreadsheets are used. This process absorbs and subsumes much of the ‘best practice’ and end-user disciplines that are conventionally used to address risk. Traditional spreadsheets have no clear barrier between data and programme instructions – in the Turing sense – or between input data and output information. Hypernumbers enables those barriers to be simply and reliably re-imposed, thus draining off a whole category of run-time errors. This separation allows spreadsheet usage to be split into two distinct phases – development, where audit and testing can reduce errors, and deployment, where what would be risky practices in other spreadsheet paradigms are simply engineered out. Using these techniques, ‘applications’ consisting of 10,000+ spreadsheets used by tens of users can be, and have been, safely built. 1 A BRIEF HISTORY OF SPREADSHEETS Spreadsheets arose in the swansong days of the mainframe and really exploded only with the rise of personal computer [ROIZEN, 2010]. The run-time environment was unnetworked personal computers in a single user mode. The early spreadsheet war was decisively won by Microsoft Excel, and the second phase began – a battle between proprietary software and the open source spreadsheets. This

Reducing Spreadsheet Errors
OVERVIEW: Increasing computational power and memory capacity in desktop computers has resulted in access to numerical techniques previously unavailable to many users. Although computational capabilities have increased, many users are unable to take full advantage of this power due to limited programming expertise. Spreadsheets offer these users a means to capitalize upon computational potential...
متن کاملSpreadsheets on the Move: An Evaluation of Mobile Spreadsheets
The power of mobile devices has increased dramatically in the last few years. These devices are becoming more sophisticated allowing users to accomplish a wide variety of tasks while on the move. The increasingly mobile nature of business has meant that more users will need access to spreadsheets while away from their desktop and laptop computers. Existing mobile applications suffer from a numb...
متن کاملSuccessfully Teaching Relational Database Concepts to Computer Literacy Students: The Spreadsheet Metaphor
A challenge facing computer literacy classes is the proper course content level. The challenge is to take the students to a higher level academically but without driving them away because they feel an “easy” course has become “hard.” Accepting this challenge, we have moved the database portion of the computer literacy class beyond keystrokes (rote learning) to data modeling using the spreadshee...
متن کاملLessons Learned from Evaluating the Usability of Mobile Spreadsheet Applications
It is estimated that 90% of all the analysts in business perform calculations on spreadsheets. Due to advances in technology, spreadsheet applications can now be used on mobile devices and several such applications are available for platforms such as Android and iOS. Research on spreadsheets revolves around several themes, but little work has been done in evaluating the usability of such applic...
متن کاملTablexcel: A Multi-user, Multi-touch Interactive Tabletop Interface for Microsoft Excel Spreadsheets
In this paper, we present Tablexcel, a tabletop interface to Microsoft Excel. Single-user, desktop-based computer applications are pervasive in our daily lives and work. An application like Microsoft Excel, a widely deployed spreadsheet application, is used by a large number of businesses and users. Often, several users will collaborate on the creation of a spreadsheet, for example exchanging E...
